Strong to severe storms possible in parts of the Houston area Friday

HOUSTON (CW39) – Friday is warm and humid, with only isolated storm chances. However, if storms do develop, they could turn strong to severe.

Main threats will be damaging wind, hail, and a brief tornado can’t be ruled out.

Warm, humid, and watching for a few stronger storms

Friday looks warm and muggy across Southeast Texas, with highs near 87 in Houston and low to mid 80s closer to the coast. Overnight lows in the low to mid-70s.

Most of the day will be partly sunny to mostly cloudy, and not everyone will see rain.

We have a low chance of an isolated thunderstorm or two turning severe to strong. But a few isolated showers and thunderstorms could develop this afternoon and evening, especially along and north of I-10.

Friday’s severe weather risk

The better storm risk today is for areas along and north of I-10.

The latest outlook from the Storm Prediction Center highlights a Slight Risk, level 2 of 5, for portions of Houston, Trinity, and Polk counties, with a broader Marginal Risk, level 1 of 5, north of a Galveston-Angleton-El Campo line.

That means most of Southeast Texas will not see severe weather, but any storm that does get going could become strong quickly.

The main hazards with any stronger storm today look to be:

  • damaging wind gusts
  • large hail
  • locally heavy rainfall
