A popular Tex-Mex chain has closed the doors of one of its Houston locations after apparently losing its lease, according to signage outside the restaurant.
Instead of cars lined up at its drive-thru lanes, the Chacho’s at 6006 Westheimer Rd. now sits empty, with signs on the doors, windows, and a message written directly on the blank menu board: “Closed. Lost our lease. Visit us at Chacho’s South Loop by Reliant or Chacho’s Tidwell.”
Chacho’s website still lists the Westheimer restaurant among its roundup of seven open locations across the state, so it’s unclear when it closed. Chron has reached out for comment but did not hear back. We attempted to call the other Houston outposts, specifically located at 5350 North Fwy and 2700 S Loop W., but they did not answer.
John Burke founded Chacho’s in 1998 in San Antonio. The fast-casual restaurant became quickly known for its 24-hour service, but it also had growing pains. The restaurant was “pretty unsuccessful the first decade,” according to its website. Burke and his wife later turned the restaurant around by focusing on larger portions and better ingredients. The business soon expanded to several locations in San Antonio and Houston.
Chacho’s prides itself on “small batch scratch-made cooking” and “stronger” margaritas made with fresh lime juice. Aside from that, the restaurant chain’s menu is fairly similar to other Tex-Mex places. There are tacos, gorditas, burritos, nachos, quesadillas and, of course, fajitas…
