Houston’s Homebuyer Assistance Program Proposes Down Payment Cap Raise

Houston’s Homebuyer Assistance Program is proposing to raise its down payment subsidy cap from $50,000 to $75,000—a 50% increase that could put homeownership within reach for buyers who’ve been just short of qualifying.

The city’s Housing and Community Development Department is seeking approval for an eighth amendment to its Homebuyer Assistance Program guidelines, which would also standardize eligibility criteria across all of the city’s single-family housing programs.

Less time to find a home: 90 days instead of 120

The proposal comes with a tradeoff. The window buyers have to find a home after receiving assistance would shrink from 120 days to 90 days—a full month less to complete a home search.

For buyers already stretching to afford a home, the tighter timeline could add real pressure at a stressful stage of the process.
