MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Medical cannabis is now being sold in Alabama, with the first dispensary opening in Montgomery on June 4, but it could be a while before a dispensary opens in Madison County.
The delays on medical cannabis access are due to several reasons, with a key issue pointing to the caps put on medical cannabis licenses by Alabama lawmakers when approving the product as a whole five years ago.

Lawmakers placed caps on the number of licenses that could be issued to grow, produce and sell medical cannabis. They determined that only four companies can receive licenses to dispense, or sell, the product. Those approved companies can then operate a maximum of three locations across the state, meaning only 12 dispensaries can legally open.
