SMITHS STATION, Ala. (WTVM) — A Smiths Station native played a key role in NASA’s Artemis II mission to the moon, leading the team responsible for a system designed to save astronauts’ lives in an emergency.
Dr. Precious Mitchell works at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. She served as the lead solid propulsion engineer for the launch abort system on Artemis II.
“The launch abort system is a set of three solid rocket motors that the astronauts have available to them in the event of emergency during ascent or on the pad,” Mitchell said. “Really a tool to help save their lives if needed.”…
