Runaway alligator owner in Indiana explains escape, denounces neighborhood’s safety concerns

AUBURN, Ind. (WANE) – An alligator has been on the loose in Auburn since Thursday night and its owner is facing backlash.

Mark Kohlhorst runs the animal show “Mark’s Ark” where he goes to schools, churches, and other venues across northeast Indiana to let people see animals up close.

“I’ve got a lot of animals, there’s about 55 different species that I use for my shows and there’s probably about 30 or 40 more that I don’t use,” Kohlhorst said.

Kohlhorst was coming back from one of those shows Thursday evening, putting his animals away, when he noticed his ventilated cooler where he put his two-foot-long alligator, Irwin, was empty. He searched for the gator all night with no luck. He reported the animal missing to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on Friday…
