What Most Indiana Residents Don’t Realize About Young Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers are a familiar sight throughout Indiana, whether they are climbing oak trees in state forests or visiting backyard suet feeders during the colder months. Most people recognize the striking red, black, and white plumage of species like the Red-bellied Woodpecker or the Downy Woodpecker. Far fewer, however, have ever seen a young woodpecker or understand the remarkable journey these birds take before becoming skilled climbers and powerful drummers.

Young woodpeckers spend much of their early lives hidden inside tree cavities, completely out of sight. By the time they finally emerge, they already possess many adult features, making it easy to overlook the incredible changes that occurred during the weeks spent inside the nest.

Indiana’s diverse forests, woodlots, parks, and suburban neighborhoods provide excellent habitat for several woodpecker species.
