An Indiana father of six has died after a freak accident involving a pot hauler at a steel plant.
On Saturday, Aug. 15, USW Local 9231 Director Mike Millsap shared on social media that one of the union’s members, later identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Stepp, was killed in an incident while operating a pot hauler at the Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor Plant, located around 50 miles from Chicago near Lake Michigan.
A pot hauler is a specialized heavy vehicle used to lift, transport and dump giant cast-steel pots filled with extremely hot liquid waste material known as slag, according to the Bulk Equipment Corporation.
“This just breaks my heart,” Millsap wrote in a statement, noting that he had been in contact with the president of Local 150, “offering our help to the local and the member’s family.” He shared, “The USW sends its thoughts and prayers to the brother’s family and friends.”…
