On Saturday evening, Aug. 22, 2026, at about 9 p.m., Indiana State Police Trooper Nathan Newton conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 64 near the 119‑mile marker after observing a gray 2018 Toyota Highlander allegedly pass another vehicle on the right by driving on the emergency shoulder. Trooper Newton saw the vehicle then force its way between two cars in the right lane, creating a hazardous situation for other motorists. The driver was subsequently arrested on multiple charges.
Trooper Newton was patrolling eastbound on I‑64 when he observed the Highlander pass another motorist on the shoulder and then force its way between two vehicles in the right‑hand lane with very little distance between them. Trooper Newton attempted a traffic stop, and the vehicle eventually pulled to the side of the interstate.
