Less than two weeks ago, Carmel Sand and Gravel on Hazel Dell Parkway was an operating quarry. Today, it’s full of more than 8 billion gallons of water, but Carmel officials say there’s a restoration plan in the works.
The quarry was inundated with water during the historic flooding, which peaked on Aug. 15 and eroded the ground and caused the collapse of the nearby bridge on Hazel Dell Parkway, south of 106th Street.
Hamilton County officials are aiming to replace the bridge by the end of 2027 and hope it will cost less than $10 million. Meanwhile, there’s a plan taking shape to drain the quarry so that it can operate as it did before the flooding, Carmel Utilities director Lane Young told IndyStar…
