Sophia Torres couldn’t leave her neighborhood for two days after the worst storm she had ever seen collapsed trees she had known for her entire life.
On Aug. 11, northwest Indiana was hit with a derecho storm, with winds reaching more than 75 mph. Over 300,000 people experienced power outages as the storm affected many people’s way of living for weeks with no home-cooked meals, no air conditioning, no hot water and more.
“Parts of northwest Indiana have been without electricity for ten days,” said Rep. Chris Campbell in her Disaster Recovery Resources and Relief email, “and at least 1,000 Hoosiers have been displaced or evacuated across central and eastern Indiana.”
