A Morgan County sheriff’s deputy has been released from the hospital after she was shot Tuesday morning during a welfare check.

Deputies responded to a home in the 7000 block of Beech Grove Road in Martinsville to check on a suicidal person about 7:30 a.m. Dispatchers had received a concern from someone who called 911 after seeing a social media post about a friend potentially going to harm themselves.

No one answered the door when deputies knocked, but an unidentified 15-year-old boy inside fired a shot that struck the deputy, said Morgan County Sheriff Richard Myers .

As Deputy Mallory K. Schwab walked the perimeter of the home, she was shot in her upper right shoulder, missing her bulletproof vest. Responding officers took her away from the scene and Schwab was brought to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by ambulance for treatment.
