Historical marker honors legacy of Phyllis Wheatley YWCA in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A cornerstone of the Indianapolis Black community, which offered safe haven to women and girls for 30 years, is now honored with a historical marker on the grounds of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church .

The Phyllis Wheatley Young Women’s Christian Association building, built in 1929, provided the Black community with a space to meet, attend classes, and enjoy recreation safely in a segregated city. It was across the street from St. Philip’s current location.
