Surveillance cameras lead to quick arrest of Texas man after shooting in downtown Indy

INDIANAPOLIS – A Texas man has been arrested and charged with a shooting that occurred over the weekend in downtown Indianapolis.

Court records show the crime was all caught on camera, leading to the suspect being arrested within minutes of the violence. With a camera looking on, an armed suspect walked up to a group of people early Sunday morning.

Wearing a distinctive White Sox jacket, the suspect got involved in a fight. At one point, the suspect pointed a gun directly at someone’s head.

Thankfully, no one was hurt when at least one shot was fired into the air. Even before the shooting took place, police were watching the disturbance on real time video.

That allowed an officer to arrive before the shot was even fired, leading to 35-year-old Len Smith being taken into custody before he could leave the scene.

“If you’re committing crimes in downtown Indianapolis, there’s a good chance our cameras are going to catch you,” said IMPD downtown district commander Shane Foley. “While we don’t want any criminal activity or violence to take place, we’re using our cameras almost daily to identify people responsible for criminal activity and holding them accountable.”

In fact, the same portable camera set up in the parking lot along Meridian Street recorded a different shooting just two weeks ago. That’s when another fight escalated into a shooting that left one woman wounded…
