Mississippi Children’s Museum celebrates Juneteenth with hands-on history lessons

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The Mississippi Children’s Museum is marking Juneteenth with a full day of hands-on activities designed to help young children understand one of the most significant moments in American history.

From coloring pages and empathy bracelets to designing their own Juneteenth flags, children at the museum on Thursday had the chance to explore the history of emancipation through creative, age-appropriate activities.

Rachel Myers, director of exhibits at the Mississippi Children’s Museum, said the hands-on approach is intentional, making it easier for families to have bigger conversations about a complex topic. “Like thinking about emancipation from slavery, it is a major part of American history, and really it is part of all of our stories,” Myers said. “So if there’s a way to break it down into smaller parts, whether it’s through a story, whether it’s through a drawing, understanding that having resilience in this country and through your history is really important to building character.”…
