City officials: Parks Department going away, parks are not

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson’s Parks and Recreation Department is being eliminated, but the city says it remains committed to maintaining parks and providing youth programming.

On Tuesday, the City Council approved dissolving the department and merging its divisions into Human and Cultural Services and Public Works.

Chief Administrative Officer Pieter Teeuwissen said the move will save the cash-strapped city about $250,000 a year, in part by eliminating the director, deputy director and other administrative positions…
