Jacksonville is starting Thursday with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70s, but the calm opening will not last. Afternoon heat will push the mercury near 97 degrees, while humidity could make it feel as hot as 110 to 112 degrees across the city and much of Northeast Florida.
The National Weather Service Jacksonville has issued a Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. Thursday for Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Officials warn that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could cause heat-related illness, especially for people working or exercising outside.
Heat Peaks Before Afternoon Storms
Mostly sunny skies should hold through early afternoon, with southwest winds running 5 to 14 mph and gusts reaching 21 mph. Showers and thunderstorms may develop after 1 p.m., with a 50% chance of rain and rainfall totals generally between a tenth and a quarter-inch.
The strongest storms could bring frequent lightning, torrential downpours, localized flooding and sudden wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph. Slow-moving storms may cause problems in urban and low-lying areas, so outdoor plans should include a quick route to shelter before thunder arrives.
