Serial Killer Jailed in California Confesses to 1980 Murder of Florida Tourist

Billy Mansfield Jr. admitted to kidnapping and killing Carol Ann Barrett, 18, who was on spring break when she disappeared

Infamous serial killer Billy Mansfield Jr. has admitted to killing a sixth woman more than 40 years ago, police said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office wrote on X , formerly Twitter, that Mansfield copped to kidnapping and killing Carol Ann Barrett, an 18-year-old girl who had been in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida with high school friends on spring break in March 1980 when she disappeared.

Barrett was abducted from her motel at 2:00 a.m. and discovered near a ditch along a highway in Jacksonville the next day. Her killer was never found, but her case was reopened in 2017 and police eventually identified Mansfield as a suspect.

“In September of 2022, after multiple interviews spanning two years, Billy Mansfield advised that he was in fact the suspect in the police sketch completed following the abduction,” police said. “He went on to confess to the abduction from the Daytona Beach Shores hotel, as well as to her murder shortly thereafter.”
