Alex Wright comes up big vs. Jaguars to help as Myles Garrett deals with foot injury

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Myles Garrett wasn’t close to 100% Sunday in Jacksonville. It turns out the Browns defensive end didn’t need to be against the Jaguars.

Not with Garrett’s young pupil, third-year end Alex Wright, wanting to leave his own mark. That is exactly what Wright did when he sacked quarterback Trevor Lawrence for a safety with 1:44 remaining in what ended up being an 18-13 Browns win .

“That was huge for us,” Garrett said afterward. “We needed that kind of cushion and we got the ability to pin on respect that next possession. But us being able to work together, rush together like that, him working off of me, me going high and then him coming underneath to make that play, that’s exactly how we draw it up. And he’s going to make many more of those plays.”

The sack for Wright was his first of the season, but it was a carryover from what he did near the end of last season. He surged to a five-sack season in his second season, and needed just two games to get himself 20% of the way there this season.
