Hudson commissioners OK ALPR cameras in Hoboken after Weehawken effort derailed

The Hudson County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved (9-0) automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras proposed to be installed on light poles under county jurisdiction in Hoboken yesterday after a similar effort in Weehawken failed this year.

Commissioner Bill O’Dea (D-2) told HCV he wasn’t sure why no members of the public voiced objections to the resolution, despite the same resolution for Weehawken drawing several comments.

Meanwhile, Board Chair Anthony Romano (D-5) defended the cameras approved on county-owned traffic signal poles and mast arms in Hoboken as unrelated to anything pertaining to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which came up previously.

“It’s more of a proactive thing. There’s a car theft issue. And the parking authority dealing with vehicles that don’t have residential parking permits. They’re very strict with that when it comes to residential permit parking. And that’s basically what it is,” he stated…
