Severe storms leave downed trees, power outages throughout NY, NJ

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Clean up is underway after severe storms and powerful winds left behind a trail of destruction throughout New York and New Jersey on Friday night.

Dozens of trees were uprooted throughout the tri-state, blocking roads and leaving behind damage in parks, photos from PIX11 journalists show.

According to the NYC Parks, at least 521 trees were toppled across the five broroughs as a result of the winds. A social media post from Notify NYC warned those celebrating the Fourth of July to use caution when traveling through the five boroughs.

In Park Slope, Brooklyn, multiple fallen trees damaged cars and blocked roads. Meanwhile uprooted trees were found laying across lawns and knocked out power in Morris Plains and Roxbury, New Jersey.

More than 210,000 JCP&L customers were impacted by the thunderstorms in New Jersey, according to the electric company. About 150,000 JCP&L customers were still without power on Saturday morning, along with 23,200 PSE&G NJ customers…
