Jersey City Councilmen Frank “Educational” Gilmore and Michael Griffin are calling for more protections for city tenants living in tax abated buildings.
“With the median rent exceeding $2,000 per month, and nearly 15.6% of Jersey City residents living in poverty, protecting affordability for tenants in tax abated properties is critical to protecting residents,” Griffin said in a statement.
“Our taxpayers are investing and supporting affordable housing and tax abatements. We have a responsibility to ensure those benefits remain with the residents they are intended to protect.”
The councilmen’s offices are reviewing are laws prohibiting owners of tax abated properties from passing future tax increases onto tenants, establishing a centralized rental registry that cross-references annual property tax assessments with tenant rent rolls (while redacting tenant’s sensitive personal information)…
