Inside FEMA’s disaster recovery center in West Michigan

PLAINWELL, MICH. (WOOD) — Michigan disaster recovery centers have been open since Monday, helping people still recovering from April’s severe weather that left a path of destruction across West Michigan.

After two tornadoes tore through Allegan County, the Federal Emergency Management Association’s Plainwell location saw a “steady stream” of people from the Otsego-Plainwell area coming in to apply for federal disaster assistance. It was an opportunity for them to sit across from someone, share their story and find out what help may be available.

Disaster recovery centers open across Michigan

Plainwell resident Luesettie Phelps lost the place she had called home for 13 years when a tree crashed through her condo during the storm.

“I think I was in shock that night,” she said. “It was awful. I can’t describe it. I mean, it’s home, you know?”…
