Neighbors escape Portage apartment fire thanks to smoke alarm

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — A smoke alarm alerted neighbors to a fire in a Portage apartment Monday night, allowing everyone to escape and firefighters to douse flames before they spread too far, the Portage Department of Public Safety said.

Just before 11:30 p.m., an area police officer saw smoke coming from the second floor of an apartment complex on Applegrove Lane near the intersection of W Milham Avenue and US-131. Residents of an apartment complex also heard smoke alarms and called 911. First responders with the Portage Department of Public Safety arrived to find smoke coming from the second floor.

Crews went in and found a fire in the attic area, which they put out, PDPS said…
