Portage man guilty of attempted murder for shooting Kalamazoo Township cop

KALAMAZOO, MI — A man who seriously injured a Kalamazoo Township police officer during a shootout on March 27, 2025, now faces up to life in prison.

Kenyun Robert Smith, 25, was found guilty Wednesday, Aug. 12, of assault with intent to murder, resisting and obstructing a police officer causing injury, being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of resisting and obstructing an officer and three weapons felony firearms charges, according to court documents.
