Inmate from Kalamazoo dies in South Carolina prison, feds say

EDGEFIELD, S.C. (WJBF/WOOD) — A Kalamazoo man serving time in a South Carolina prison for selling fentanyl to a victim who overdosed in 2022 has died, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Antjuan Pierre Jackson was an inmate at a federal prison in Edgefield, South Carolina, 28 miles north of Augusta, Georgia. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Jackson was found unresponsive at approximately 7 a.m. on Aug. 17.

Kalamazoo man found guilty of selling fentanyl after overdose

Responding employees provided life-saving measures to Jackson as EMS arrived. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. It’s not clear what caused Jackson to become unresponsive.

Jackson was sentenced in West Michigan to 27 years in prison after he was found guilty in 2024 of distributing fentanyl causing death and possession of 40 grams or more of fentanyl with intent to distribute. Prosecutors said on Nov. 23, 2022, Jackson sold fentanyl to a victim who died from an overdose. Less than three weeks later, investigators found him with over 80 grams of fentanyl in his home as well as cash, a digital scale, cell phone and packaging materials, according to evidence presented at trial…
