Kelly denies serial killer’s request to have death sentence commuted

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced Thursday morning that she has denied serial killer John E. Robinson Sr.’s request to have his death sentence commuted.

Robnnson, of Olathe, was convicted of multiple offenses related to the murders of seven women and a teenage girl from 1985 until his arrest in June 2000 in Kansas and Missouri, officials said.

A jury in Johnson County District Court in 2002 convicted Robinson of two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Suzette Marie Trouten and Isabela Lewicka. officials said. The jury sentenced Robinson to death on each capital murder conviction.

On appeal, the Kansas Supreme Court in November 2016 upheld the conviction and death sentence for the first capital murder conviction, but reversed the second capital murder conviction because it was “multiplicitous,” meaning that it punished Robinson twice for the same offense and gave rise to a constitutional double jeopardy violation…
