Community learn to swim event held on 43rd anniversary of Chiefs player’s drowning death

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – On Monday, the Chiefs, Clark Hunt Family Foundation, G.E.H.A., the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City came together to hold a Joe Delaney Learn to Swim Parkwood Pool Celebration. It falls on the 43rd anniversary of Delaney’s death, when he drowned in a Louisiana pond trying to save three children.

The program was launched in 2022 to honor Delaney’s bravery. It has continued providing accessible swimming lessons to thousands, teaches water safety, and builds confidence in swimmers, from adults to babies as young as 6 months old.

“Watching a young gentleman over here on the sidelines – he looks like he’s about 3 ½ years old – and you know what? He’s throwing things, he’s out in the water, and he is not having any fear to step out into that water and go right after that toy that is going out into the water,” said Mark Hulet, YMCA of Greater Kansas City President and CEO. “It just starts with little things like that.”…
