On Croatia game days, Strawberry Hill turns into a party

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – When Croatia has taken the pitch in the World Cup, you can hear music, chants, and cheers coming from St. John’s Catholic Club in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, KS. It sits next to the church that was founded by Croatian immigrants and the pride runs deep in this community.

“It’s our culture, it’s our tradition, what we like to say, our ‘domovina’, our homeland,” said Stephanie Taylor Glenn. “It’s rich in culture down here. That comes to our food, our drinks, the language, but also the heart and the passion.”

For over a century, Taylor Glenn says their community has celebrated their motherland at St. John’s. For this World Cup, the watch parties have continued to grow larger and larger the father Croatia has advanced.

“We went from 50 people to 100 people to 500 people to a huge crowd,” said Joe Baric. “I want to say 1800. We ended up being something that is outstanding.”…
