Kansas City’s Bar Phoebe brings Midwest nostalgia and a suffragist’s spirit to historic downtown building

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A new bar has opened on the top floor of the historic Holtman Building in downtown Kansas City, drawing on Midwest nostalgia and the legacy of a local women’s rights pioneer.

Bar Phoebe, which has been open for less than a month, takes its name from Phoebe Jane Ess — known as the Dean of Missouri Club Women. Ess was a women’s rights advocate and suffragist who championed equal opportunity in Kansas City.
