From Walnut Hill to Dunford Place: The Story of a Surviving Country Estate

Nestled well off the street behind a canopy of trees at 10804 Grandview Road sits an historic home with layers of history. The gate and two pillars that greet passerby’s from the street tell a bit of the story – twisted in black wrought iron, scrolled in cursive are the words “Dunford Place.”

But behind those gates and past a tree-lined utopia is the home and outbuildings that have miraculously survived past the development of south Kansas City, something that is never a guarantee as real estate speculators snatch up land even today and spit out suburban homes.

Its survival was miraculous, and the story behind Dunford Place tells of a time in this area’s history when Kansas Citians with extra cash opted to spend their summers at homes built “in the country.”…
