For many people heading to a concert, nightclub or social event, feeling safe can determine whether they are able to relax and enjoy the night. Richard Smith understood that responsibility extended beyond standing at a door and watching a crowd.
Smith, a military veteran and longtime security professional who became a familiar face throughout Kansas City’s nightlife community, died Aug. 8 at age 57. At venues and events across the metro, his imposing presence was often accompanied by an outgoing personality that made him as likely to be talking and laughing with patrons as watching over them.
Smith worked security at numerous clubs, private parties and concerts, including events featuring artists such as Big Boogie, Lil Bootsie and T-Rell. He became particularly connected to Black-owned establishments and entertainment spaces.
