Nearly 150 visual artists are slated to exhibit along Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue as Kansas City’s historic Westport neighborhood gears up for a major fall weekend. Art Westport, now in its 46th year, is expected to draw more than 30,000 attendees for three days of juried art, live music and family activities in the historic entertainment district.
The festival is listed for Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13 by ZAPP and iFamilyKC, while KMBC also previews the event. Hours stretch from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Kerrie Tyndall, executive director of the Westport Regional Business League, appeared on KMBC9’s First News Saturday Morning to preview the event, which showcases regional artists working in painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, glass and wood. Beyond the art booths, organizers are promoting children’s art activities, live music, and open access to Westport’s shops, bars and restaurants throughout the weekend.
A Festival Built Exclusively for Local Makers
What separates Art Westport from Kansas City’s other big fall art fairs is its strict residency rule: every visual artist applying to exhibit must live within 80 miles of the downtown Kansas City, Missouri post office, according to ZAPP’s official vendor guidelines. That regional cap is a deliberate contrast to shows like the Plaza Art Fair, which draws more than 240 artists each autumn, according to iFamilyKC, which markets Art Westport as the city’s largest and oldest outdoor art festival reserved exclusively for local artists.
Vendor guidelines published by EntryThingy show organizers cap the visual artist roster at 150 participants. The festival uses a juried selection process for artists working across mediums.
