Retired KC Police Captain, Wife Die After Jeep Plunges Off I-435 Into Semi

A silver Jeep Cherokee carrying a retired Kansas City police captain and his wife of 46 years veered off Interstate 435 just before 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 25, barreled down an embankment, tore through a metal fence and crossed a parking lot before slamming into the front of a parked semi-trailer. Mark Hatcher, 68, and Karen Hatcher were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were called to the crash near 6920 Executive Drive, close to where the interstate crosses the Missouri River, according to The Kansas City Star. Both the driver and passenger of the Jeep were pronounced dead at the scene, the station’s report notes, a detail also confirmed by FOX4 Kansas City. Per the JC Post account, DiMartino said both Hatchers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
