NKC Health, the North Kansas City system that was formerly North Kansas City Hospital and Meritas Health, stopped taking UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans as an in-network provider on October 1, 2026. The change covers three plan families: UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage, AARP/Optum plans and UnitedHealthcare Dual Complete. Members who see NKC Health doctors or use its hospital now face out-of-network rules, and the system has told them to check what their own plan allows. Medicare’s yearly enrollment window opens October 15, which gives affected members a chance to pick a plan that still includes NKC Health before 2027 coverage starts.
What NKC Health announced for UnitedHealthcare members
NKC Health posted a coverage update saying that beginning October 1, 2026, it is out of network with UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans, AARP/Optum plans and UnitedHealthcare Dual Complete. The notice was last updated in August 2026. A banner on the system’s accepted insurance page, which carries an August 14, 2026 update date, repeats the warning about changes to UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage coverage effective that same day in October. That page lists UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage as excluded, though it still accepts other UnitedHealthcare products such as Golden Rule and Medica Choice.
The October change is the second Medicare Advantage insurer the system has dropped in two years. The same list excludes HealthSpring, the Cigna Medicare Advantage brand, and a Humana plan called Humana Community HMO Medicare Advantage. Standard Humana Medicare Advantage is on the accepted list, and the system names Humana Medicare Advantage, Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans as the in-network options.
For a member of one of the three plans, the decision before December 7 is whether to keep the current plan and live with out-of-network rules at NKC Health, or to move to a plan that includes the system. The 2027 Medicare Open Enrollment Decision Kit, a paid guide from RetireShield, includes a provider call script for asking a plan whether NKC Health doctors are in network and a cost calculator spreadsheet that compares plans on cost, drugs and doctors…
