‘I’ll never forget seeing that funnel’ — 60 years later, brothers recall tornado that hit Overland Park

It was just a normal afternoon on Wednesday, April 19, 1966, and students at the relatively new Katherine Carpenter Elementary school in Overland Park were about to be let out for the day.

Curtis Baker, who was 11 at the time, was getting ready for student crossing guard duty and gathering with his cohort of other young safety patrol persons donning safety belts and flags. They met every day under the overhang at the school’s front entrance.

There, the principal, Henry Morse, and another teacher were looking at something in the sky and pointing. Curious by nature, Baker remembers walking closer to see what all the fuss was about…
