KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A man is dead and an investigation is underway after a truck drove through a barrier and into the Tennessee River Friday morning, Knoxville Police said.
Knoxville Police spokesperson Scott Erland told 6 News at the scene that officers responded to the scene, which is at Volunteer Landing, after receiving a call about a truck going into the river at approximately 5:37 a.m. The Department initially released that a Nissan truck drove through a sidewalk barrier and into the river.

Erland said University of Tennessee Police officers and first responders with American Medical Response (AMR) were the first officials at the scene, and they attempted to go into the river to remove the driver from the vehicle.
The driver, who was identified as an 89-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Throughout the morning since that call came in, we’ve had crash reconstruction investigators here, and they’re leading the investigation. And they’ll be working backwards from the crash scene to determine the circumstances surrounding and leading up to the crash,” Erland said…
