High ranking cartel members charged in investigation that began in East Tennessee, DOJ says

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The United States Department of Justice has moved a case, that began in East Tennessee, into federal criminal court against two high ranking members of the United Cartels.

“Farias Mendoza and Vega Farias are charged with trafficking immense amounts of methamphetamine into the United States and supporting a foreign terrorist organization,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The two defendants indicted yesterday are close relatives of the United Cartels’ top leader Juan Jose Farias Alvarez, who was charged by the Criminal Division in 2024.”

According to the DOJ, United Cartels are based out of Michoacan, Mexico and is capable of producing large amounts of methamphetamine for distribution around the world, records show…
