K9 Warning Ends Shed Standoff With Armed Lakeland Felon

LAKELAND, Fla. – A 52-year-old Lakeland man faces nearly a dozen criminal charges after an argument escalated into a brief standoff with law enforcement inside a backyard shed on Thursday night.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on Meadow Glen Road at approximately 7:41 p.m. on June 11th following a report of a disturbance involving a firearm. According to investigators, Michael Gilley got into a verbal dispute with another person, grabbed a gun, and threatened to kill them while armed.

When deputies arrived at the property, Gilley fled from the home and locked himself inside a nearby shed. He initially ignored law enforcement orders to come outside. The standoff ended without violence after deputies informed Gilley that a K9 unit was prepared to enter the structure to extract him. Gilley then chose to surrender and was taken into custody without further incident…
