Semi driver dies after timber pierces truck’s cab in crash near Lakeland

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A semi truck driver died after rear-ending another semi that was hauling large pieces of timber near Lakeland on Wednesday.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, 44-year-old Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford, was following behind a Mack truck hauling timber on US 98 just before 11 a.m.

The Mack truck began to slow down; however, investigators said it appeared that Beauford didn’t realize it and struck the load of timber protruding from the rear of the Mack truck’s trailer.

Large pieces of timber pierced the cab of Beauford’s truck, as well as the trailer and cargo within the trailer, according to deputies.
