Polk County residents seek court review, emergency halt of proposed sand mine

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A proposed sand mine near several neighborhoods in Lake Wales, is drawing growing concern from residents, with two now asking a judge to step in and stop the project before construction begins.

The Mammoth Grove Sand Mine, proposed by property owner PH Citrus, would be built along Mammoth Grove Road, near communities surrounding Cypress, Saddlebag and Thomas lakes.

Resident Kathy Pratt and citrus grower Michael Machata have filed a petition in circuit court requesting a judicial review of the Polk County Board of County Commissioners’ decision to approve a conditional use permit for the mine.
