Tornado watch issued for Lakeland area

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the Tampa Bay region on Saturday, May 2, from 2:55 p.m. to 6 p.m. EDT, as a strong cold front moves across Florida and triggers bands of showers and thunderstorms.

Forecasters say storms are already developing across the Nature Coast and will continue moving south and east through the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay. The strongest activity is expected to reach the Tampa Bay area between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., with additional storms pushing into southwest Florida through about 10 p.m. While most storms will weaken overnight, meteorologists say a few could become severe, capable of producing damaging wind gusts, hail and isolated tornadoes.

“Showers and thunderstorms will spread south across the area today and Saturday night, with a few strong or severe thunderstorms possible,” the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay wrote. “A Slight to Marginal Risk for severe storms is possible today, with some of the stronger storms possibly producing some damaging winds, tornadoes and some hail.”…
