Georgia inmate impersonated sheriff to steal $20K from central Pa. woman: police

A man calling from a Georgia prison cell told a Lancaster County woman he was a local sheriff’s lieutenant and that she owed $20,000 for missing jury duty, police said.

After the early morning call on March 13, the West Lampeter Township woman withdrew the money from her bank and deposited it into a Bitcoin account, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by police on Thursday.

Police said James Copeny, 38, told the woman there was a warrant out for her arrest and that she would be jailed if she didn’t make the deposit…
