Group celebrates after removing 248,000 pounds of litter from Lansing rivers

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Thousands of volunteers have removed more than 248,000 pounds of litter and trash from the Lansing River Trail over the past three and a half years, leading to the declaration that city’s rivers have been “cleared and cleaned.”

The Michigan Waterways Stewards hosted an event Tuesday to celebrate the milestone. The organization says Lansing’s Grand River, Red Cedar River, Sycamore Creek, riverside parks and other adjacent stretches of the Lansing River Trail have all been cleared and cleaned.

“When you have a city on a river — or a city on two rivers — it’s something that you want to show off,” Lansing Mayor Andy Schor told 6 News during the event Tuesday. “It’s an incredible natural resource and feature.”

The group began its efforts to clear litter from the Lansing River Trail back in 2022. Since then, 4,150 volunteers have removed thousands of pounds of litter and trash across 328 projects…
