MSU SURVIVAL GUIDE: Don’t get too attached to your college ‘Day Ones’

I was sure my roommate was going to be my college best friend. After spending less than three nights in our freshman dorm, we were already planning on coming back after four years to take grad pics and bring gifts to the new occupants.

We lived in the future: making joint playlists, planning duo Halloween costumes and trips to other towns. It’s easy when you exchange life stories faster than your parents can get out the door. As college freshmen, we were eager for best friendship, the kind that every book, TV show and movie advertised that we would immediately find upon our arrival to college. So when we met someone decent, we decided it was fate and called it a day.

As soon as we covered the last 18 years of our lives, we went to the Grand River Target for late-night snacks – we didn’t know about the magic of Sparty’s yet – and Rally House for game-day face stickers…
