EAST LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – An Ingham County judge declared a mistrial Thursday after a jury could not reach a unanimous verdict in the case against a Lansing man charged in the death of 20-year-old Caleb Alan Shermoe, of Fowlerville.
David Gaines Jr., 24, of Lansing, faces one manslaughter charge. Prosecutors say Gaines assaulted Shermoe in January of 2025 and he died from his injuries days later.
Deliberations continued before the jury informed the court it could not reach a unanimous verdict. Both parties consented to a declaration of mistrial. The court declared a mistrial at 12:01 p.m., and the jury was dismissed at 12:02 p.m.
