Convicted murderer who could go free ordered to pay victim’s family restitution

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A man who may be released from prison after he was resentenced in a 1986 murder must pay the victim’s family restitution, the Eaton County prosecutor’s office says.

John Hubbard was killed in Eaton County in 1986, Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney Douglas Lloyd said in a release. That same year, Roger Ruthruff was convicted of first-degree murder in Hubbard’s death and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Because he was expected to spend the rest of his life in prison, the prosecutor’s office says no restitution was requested.

After the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that those 20 years and younger cannot receive mandatory life sentences for murder, Ruthruff was resentenced, ultimately given the chance for release.
