New proposed bills would toughen penalties for illegally passing school buses

ST. JOHNS, Mich. (News 10) – A new package of bills proposed in the Michigan House would toughen penalties for drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus.

The bills, introduced by state Rep. Parker Fairbairn, would raise the maximum civil fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus from $500 to $1,000. The bills would also require drivers to stop at least 50 feet from a stopped bus, up from the current 20 feet.
