Nevada unveils interactive tool mapping federal lands available for possible development, other uses

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Gov. Joe Lombardo unveiled a publicly available interactive tool in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management Nevada to show federal lands that may be available across the state on Monday.

The tool is designed to bolster coordination, planning and information sharing about federal lands. Approximately 85% of Nevada’s total land area is owned by the federal government, much of it undeveloped.

Federal land availability in Clark County

Black outlined areas identified on the interactive mapping tool show BLM lands potentially available for disposal across Nevada. In Clark County, numerous areas are identified on the outskirts of the Las Vegas valley.

One plot of land identified on the new tool is about 380 acres near Desert Inn and Hollywood. The identified disposal type is listed as “sale.” The land is on the far east edge of the valley near Frenchman Mountain and is virtually untouched, though housing developments have been proposed nearby.

Housing crisis and land availability

Sen. Jacky Rosen argued for the need to release federal land for affordable housing last year, saying it could “tackle our housing crisis by… making appropriate federal land available for housing.”…
