‘Not a harmless joke’: Las Vegas man gets 9 months in prison for pointing laser at Metro helicopter

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who pleaded guilty to aiming a laser pointer at a Metro police helicopter was sent to prison for nine months, and authorities emphasized it’s a serious crime.

Sergio Octavio Sanchez aimed the beam of a green laser pointer at a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department helicopter several times on Jan. 2, 2025, according to court documents. The helicopter was providing air support for officers on the ground. When the laser struck the aircraft, the pilot had to shield his eyes and divert from its assignment and flight path.
